Earth Day and Sustainable

By JRC Reporters Alina Fang and Kylie Zhang

As Earth Day approaches on April 22nd, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our beautiful planet and explore ways to protect it. Earth Day is a global reminder that every small step we take to reduce our environmental footprint can lead to big positive changes. This year, let’s commit to making sustainability a part of our everyday lives. Whether you’re new to eco-friendly practices or a seasoned advocate, there’s always something we can do to make a difference.

Here are some sustainable tips and easy actions you can adopt to celebrate Earth Day every day:

Conserve Energy

Small changes in energy usage can make a big impact. Turn off lights and unplug electronics when they’re not in use to prevent unnecessary energy consumption. Switching to LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances can also lower electricity use. If possible, consider using renewable energy sources like solar panels.

Save Water

Water is a precious resource, so using it wisely is essential. Fixing leaks, installing water-efficient appliances, and turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can all help conserve water. Additionally, collecting rainwater for plants or using a bucket instead of a hose can significantly reduce water wastage.

Recycle

Recycling keeps materials like plastic, paper, glass, and metal out of landfills, which are quickly running out of space. Less waste also means fewer harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases released from decomposing trash. Research on what materials your county accepts can also make the process much easier for the workers.

Compost

Compost adds essential nutrients and beneficial microbes to the soil, improving its structure and water retention. This leads to healthier plants and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. Check to see if your area has a compost program and if not, watching a video or following a tutorial can be a great starting point.

Transportation

Making sustainable transportation choices can significantly reduce carbon emissions. Walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transportation are great alternatives to solo driving. If driving is necessary, planning efficient routes, combining errands, and keeping your vehicle well-maintained improves fuel economy. For those in the market for a new car, considering hybrid or electric vehicles is a forward-thinking investment in clean mobility. Even something as simple as reducing unnecessary travel or choosing to work from home when possible can have a lasting impact on your carbon footprint.

Mindsets

A sustainable mindset includes being mindful of what we consume and how we live each day. Eating a more plant-based diet, supporting local farmers, and reducing food waste by planning meals and storing food properly are all ways to make a difference. Educating yourself and others about environmental issues, participating in local clean-up efforts, planting trees, and voting for policies and leaders that prioritize the planet are powerful actions that extend beyond your household. Earth Day is more than a single day—it’s a reminder that the choices we make daily can shape a healthier, greener future for generations to come.
