AAHI Heritage Month Celebration

Written by CAPA-JRC reporter Felix Hou

On May 31, 2024, the AAPI Heritage Month Celebration was held in a restaurant. When I arrived at the restaurant, it was a bit loud but had a very chatty atmosphere. People were talking, laughing, and taking pictures everywhere I looked. It was a very happy and celebratory place.

I ended up meeting some amazing people, whom I interviewed.

I first met up with Montgomery County's Sheriff Maxwell Uy. Max Uy has been Montgomery County’s Sheriff since 2022. He is also the first Asian American to hold that position.

What is your opinion on the event?

I think this is a wonderful event. It gives representatives from Maryland a chance to engage with the community and community leaders.

What is the significance of this event?

It's incredibly important to make sure that we get together and celebrate. We encourage the Asian community to be more engaged.

Next, I interviewed AAPI DLC Executive Committee member Rob Wu.

What is your opinion on the event?

This event is the banner event of the democratic party of Montgomery County, and I'm absolutely elated at the turnout of this event.

What is the significance of this event?

To show the significance of AAPI and the democratic party. This event shows that the AAPI community is here.

Next was Tazeen Ahmad, who is the current president of the Montgomery County Women's Democratic Club.

What is your opinion of this event?

I think this is a great event that brings people from the AAPI community together. These are opportunities for us to celebrate our heritage and our culture.

What is the significance of this event?

Well, this is an event from all of the democrats, so unity is going to be very important.

Finally, I had the chance to meet Praneel Suvarna, who is the student-elected BOE member of 2024.

What is your opinion of this event?

I think it's a great display of Asian American culture. I think it's really showcasing a lot of Asian American cultures. I was really proud to see that. I think it's something that I think, as a general society, I'm glad that we are moving towards recognizing Asian Americans in general.

What is the significance of this event?

The significance of the event is showing that there is representation, and we're fighting every day for representation. I think it's a great stepping stone to have this event.

The event was a very lively and fun event. It was great being there and meeting the people I interviewed. Food was also served while speeches were presented during the event, which was nice. In summary, though, it was full of amazing people and an amazing event.
